A is the basic aluminium conductor for overhead power lines (OHL). It is used in 0.4-35 kV distribution networks, especially in regions with temperate and cold climates where no additional mechanical strength is required. Compared with AS (with a steel core), it is lighter and cheaper, but requires more closely spaced supports on long spans.
It is manufactured from A5E grade aluminium wires by concentric stranding. It is used on urban and rural overhead lines with short spans and to replace outdated copper conductors on overhead lines. Aluminium is resistant to atmospheric corrosion thanks to its oxide film.
Aluminium wires
Made of A5E grade electrical aluminium. Flexibility class – solid or stranded (3, 7, 19, 37, 61, 91 wires depending on the cross-section).
Stranding
Concentric layers with adjacent layers laid in opposite directions. Without any insulation.
