AAACZ

Conductor made of Z-shaped aluminium alloy wires, without a steel core

AAACZ is a new-generation conductor with Z-shaped wires in the outer layers, made entirely of 6201 aluminium alloy, without a steel core (unlike AACSRZ). It is used for overhead power lines where the additional strength of a steel core is not required but all the advantages of the Z-shaped design are needed: lower losses, less sag, resistance to vibration and ice load. Designation breakdown: AAAC – All-Aluminium-Alloy Conductor (conductor made entirely of Al alloy), Z – Z-shaped wires.

Construction Z-shaped wires
Material 6201 Al alloy only
Continuous t° +90°C

AAACZ conductor description

AAACZ (All-Aluminium-Alloy Conductor Z-shape) is a new-generation conductor made entirely of 6201 aluminium alloy, without a steel core. The main difference from the more common AACSRZ is the absence of a steel core. This gives:

  • Lower weight: 25-30% lighter than AS of the same current-carrying capacity – less load on the supports
  • No internal corrosion at all: there is no “steel–aluminium” interface → no bimetallic corrosion
  • Better electrical performance: the entire conductor carries current, with no “dead” steel section
  • Easy recycling: a mono-material (100% Al alloy) is easier to recycle at the end of its service life

When to choose AAACZ vs AACSRZ? AAACZ is for overhead lines with short and medium spans, without extreme mechanical loads. AACSRZ is for trunk overhead lines with long spans and high loads (where the additional strength of steel is needed). The 6201 alloy is itself quite strong (much stronger than ordinary A5E Al), but a steel core still reinforces the construction.

Applications

Trunk overhead lines where a steel core is not required
Replacement of A conductors when reconstructing overhead lines
Lines in regions with low anthropogenic impact
Overhead lines with short and medium spans
Reconstruction to increase transmission capacity

Construction

1

Central element

Wire of 6201 aluminium alloy (AlMgSi) – heat-resistant, strong.

2

Inner layer

Round wires of 6201 Al alloy.

3

Outer layer – Z-shaped wires

Z-shaped profiled wires of 6201 Al alloy. They fit tightly together, forming a smooth outer surface.

4

Advantages of the Z design

Reduced outer diameter → lower wind load and sag. Smooth surface → less ice formation, self-damping of oscillations.

AAACZ cross-section – Z-shaped wires in the outer layer + round inner wires, all of 6201 Al alloy
