AS

Bare aluminium conductor steel-reinforced (ACSR) for overhead lines

AS is the main conductor for trunk overhead power lines of all voltage classes. The steel core of galvanised steel wires provides high mechanical strength, while the aluminium wires in the outer layers provide the electrical conductivity. Designation breakdown: A – aluminium, S – steel core.

Description of the AS conductor

AS is the most widely used conductor for trunk overhead power lines of all voltage classes from 35 to 750 kV. Its construction of a steel core and aluminium wires combines the high mechanical strength of steel (for long spans and heavy loads) with the good electrical conductivity of aluminium.

The AS designation includes two numbers separated by a slash: the first is the cross-section of the aluminium part (the electrical cross-section), the second is the cross-section of the steel core. For example, AS 240/32 means 240 mm² Al + 32 mm² steel. The Al/steel ratio is selected to suit the mechanical loads of the specific line: more steel for long spans and areas subject to ice loads.

Applications

Trunk overhead lines 35 – 750 kV
High-voltage overhead lines with long spans between supports
Overhead lines in areas with ice and wind loads
6-35 kV distribution networks where mechanical strength is required
Trunk power flows between substations

Construction

1

Steel core

Made of galvanised steel wires in a single-wire or multi-wire lay. Bears the main mechanical load.

2

Aluminium layers

One or more concentric layers of A5E aluminium wires. Carry the electric current.

3

Stranding

Adjacent Al layers are laid in opposite directions to resist unwinding.
