SIP-1

Self-supporting insulated wire with a bare neutral messenger

SIP-1 is a self-supporting insulated wire with three insulated phase cores and a bare neutral messenger made of aluminium alloy. The basic classic SIP type for 0.4 kV overhead lines, in use since the 1990s. Designation breakdown: SIP – self-supporting insulated wire, 1 – with a bare neutral messenger.

SIP-1 wire description

SIP-1 is the classic self-supporting insulated wire, the earliest SIP type, which appeared in the early 1990s. In Russia and the CIS it was the main choice for 0.4 kV overhead lines throughout the 2000s. It is now gradually giving way to SIP-2 (with an insulated neutral), but continues to be used where the regulatory framework or design documentation refers specifically to this type.

The main feature is the bare neutral core. This makes SIP-1 slightly cheaper than SIP-2 and allows the neutral core to be used as an earthing conductor. Disadvantages: lower electrical safety during maintenance, installation along building facades is not permitted, and problems with corrosion of the neutral core in coastal and industrial areas.

Applications

Trunk 0.4 kV overhead lines in rural and urban networks
Distribution networks with short and medium spans
Replacement of bare conductors A and AS on 0.4 kV overhead lines
Use in areas with moderate ice and wind loads
Power supply to residential, public and industrial facilities

Construction

1

Phase conductors (3 pcs)

Stranded, compacted, made of aluminium wires.

2

Bare neutral messenger

Made of 6201 aluminium alloy. Carries the mechanical load. It has no insulation – this is what distinguishes SIP-1 from SIP-2.

3

Phase core insulation

UV-stabilised cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE), black.

4

Stranding

The three insulated phase cores are stranded around the bare neutral messenger.

SIP-1 cross-section – 3 insulated phases + bare neutral messenger
