SIPG-3

Self-supporting water-blocked covered conductor for 6-20 kV overhead lines

SIPg-3 is a water-blocked version of SIP-3 with protection against longitudinal moisture propagation along the conductor. It is used in areas with high humidity, a high salt content in the air (coastal zones) and polluted industrial atmospheres. Water blocking guarantees that, if the covering is damaged at one point, moisture does not spread along the entire length of the conductor. Designation breakdown: SIPg – self-supporting insulated wire, water-blocked, 3 – covered, single-core.

SIPg-3 wire description

SIPg-3 is a special version of SIP-3 with longitudinal water blocking for operation in humid and aggressive conditions. The letter “g” in the designation means water-blocked.

Protection principle: during manufacture, a hydrophobic gel or water-blocking powder is introduced between the wires of the conductor. In the event of local damage to the protective covering (for example, a falling branch, a bullet strike or mechanical damage during installation), moisture reaching the conductor does not spread along it over long distances. In standard SIP-3, water can penetrate under the covering and travel along the entire length of the conductor, leading to corrosion and the gradual failure of the whole line.

Applications: overhead lines in coastal zones (the Aral Sea, reservoirs with saline water), industrial areas with acid precipitation, regions with high humidity and frequent precipitation, and forested areas with a risk of frequent damage to the covering.

Applications

6-20 kV overhead lines in areas with high humidity and precipitation
Coastal zones with salty air
Industrial areas with aggressive atmospheres
Forested areas with a risk of damage to the covering
Areas with an increased likelihood of icing and temperature fluctuations

Construction

1

Conductor

Stranded, compacted, made of 6201 aluminium alloy.

2

Water-blocking filler

Water-repellent hydrophobic gel or powder blocker between the wires of the conductor. Prevents longitudinal propagation of moisture along the conductor in the event of local damage to the covering.

3

Protective covering

UV-stabilised cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE), of increased thickness for better protection against external influences.

SIPg-3 cross-section – conductor with hydrophobic filler under a protective XLPE covering
