Optical cable in an overhead ground wire, with a central optical unit
OKGT-Ts is an optical cable built into an overhead ground wire, with a central optical unit. It combines the lightning-protection function of the OHL and a fibre-optic communication channel in a single structure, saving costs compared with installing a separate ground wire and optical cable. Designation breakdown: OK – optical cable, GT – overhead ground wire, Ts – central optical unit.

OKGT-Ts (Optical Ground Wire) is a combined cable that performs two functions at once: lightning protection of the overhead power line (protecting the phase conductors from direct lightning strikes and shunting induced short-circuit currents to earth) and fibre-optic communication for the operational needs of the power industry and/or commercial services.
The “Ts” design – with a central optical unit – is optimal for most applications: it gives maximum protection of the fibres, simplicity of manufacture and a wide choice of fibre counts (from 12 to 144). It is used on 35-1150 kV overhead lines. Additional functions: distributed temperature (DTS) and acoustic (DAS) sensing systems make it possible to detect lightning strikes, short circuits, icing and route breaches in real time.
TCG production complies with IEC 60794-1 (general requirements for optical cables) and the ITU-T G.652.D + G.657.A1 recommendations (standard single-mode fibre with reduced sensitivity to bending losses). Service life is 50 years.
Central element – steel optical unit
A hermetically sealed steel tube containing the fibres, filled with water-blocking gel. It protects the optical fibres from mechanical loads and moisture ingress.
Optical fibres
Grouped in bundles of 12, wrapped with coloured synthetic threads for identification. Type G.652.D + G.657.A1 – insensitive to bending losses.
1st layer
Wires of aluminium alloy 6201 – they provide electrical conductivity to carry away short-circuit currents.
2nd layer
A combination of aluminium-alloy wires and aluminium-clad steel wire – they carry the mechanical load.
