OKGT-TS-A

Optical cable in an overhead ground wire, with an aluminium-sheathed optical unit

OKGT-Ts-A is a modification of OKGT-Ts with an aluminium sheath on the central optical unit. The aluminium sheath increases the current-carrying cross-section of the cable and provides additional protection of the fibres against mechanical and thermal effects. It is used where the requirements for protecting the optical fibres are higher or where large short-circuit currents have to be carried. Designation breakdown: A – aluminium sheath on the unit.

Application OHL ≥ 35 kV
Feature Al sheath on the unit
Fibre protection Enhanced
Fibre count up to 144

Description of OKGT-Ts-A

OKGT-Ts-A is an improved version of OKGT-Ts with an aluminium sheath on the central optical unit. This gives three key advantages:

  • Protection against flashovers: in the event of an insulation flashover on the OHL, the fibres remain safe thanks to the electrically conductive sheath around the unit
  • Increased current-carrying area: the aluminium sheath adds 5-15 mm² of Al to the total cross-section, which increases the thermal short-circuit withstand by 10-20%
  • Additional mechanical protection: the Al sheath distributes loads between the steel and the optical fibres

It is used on critical OHLs of backbone telecom operators, in areas with high lightning activity and on lines with large short-circuit currents.

Applications

Trunk OHLs with critical requirements for communication reliability
Lines in areas with high lightning activity
OHL sections with large short-circuit currents (>20 kA)
Backbone networks of telecom operators on power grid infrastructure
Protection of optical fibres from insulation flashovers and induced currents

Construction

1

Central element – steel optical unit with Al sheath

A hermetically sealed steel tube containing the fibres, covered with an aluminium sheath. It provides additional protection against insulation flashovers and increases the current-carrying area.

2

Optical fibres

Grouped in bundles, marked with coloured threads. G.652.D + G.657.A1.

3

Layer

Aluminium-clad steel wires.

Cross-section of OKGT-Ts-A – steel optical unit in an Al sheath + aluminium-clad steel layer
